A quick glance at many of the young Panthers defensemen taking part in this week's development camp at the team's training facility, and one would think that General Manager Dale Tallon is building an NBA team instead of an NHL squad.

Of the 10 defensemen in camp, eight are 6-foot-2 or taller, including recent overall No. 1 draft pick, Aaron Ekblad and Michael Matheson, the Panthers top pick in the 2012 draft. Both are 6-3 and built like NFL linebackers.

Josh Brown, a sixth-round pick last year, is a man-mountain at 6-6, as is his broad-shouldered, 6-3 draftmate Michael Dowling. Matheson's Boston College teammate, Ian McCoshen, a second-round pick last year, is a beefy 6-3, 205-pounder.

"It's the NHL; you need to be big, you need to be strong, fast,'' said Matheson, 20, the captain of the B.C. Eagles in his upcoming junior season. "It's exciting for the organization.''

Already a staple on the Panthers blue line are 6-4 defenseman Erik Gudbranson, who Tallon tabbed with his third overall pick in 2010. Also, 6-4 defensemen Alexander Petrovic, a second-rounder that year, and Colby Robak, 24, hope to vie for top-six berths this season.

The Panthers added some depth on Tuesday by signing center Brett Olson and defenseman Greg Zanon to one-year deals.
Both players have two-way provisions in their contract.
Zanon gives Florida an option on defense as the 34-year-old has played in almost 500 NHL games with Nashville, Minnesota, Boston and Colorado. He spent last season with San Antonio.
Olson, 27, has played in 145 games for the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL over the past two seasons.

+ a legjobb hír :

The Florida Panthers have taken care of one of their key restricted free-agents by inking 22-year-old defenseman Erik Gudbranson to a new, two-year deal. The Cats chose the Ontario native third overall in 2010. Terms of the contract have not been made public as of yet.
With Gudbranson back for two more seasons, and the drafting of Aaron Ekblad first overall, the Cats certainly have two big building blocks for a young, deep defense in place. Next up for the club's blue line will be re-signing fellow RFAs Dmitry Kulikov and Dylan Olsen.

The Florida Panthers open their prospect developmental camp on Monday, giving the best opportunity to get a glance at the Panthers’ talented farm system. It is hard not to look at some of the names on their camp roster and just get excited about the future of the organization.

But the same look at the roster makes you realize just how young this team is. When healthy, arguably their best player was an 18-year old kid who was just drafted a few months before the season started – he is still a part of the developmental camp. - ez azért sokat elmond a többiek előző szezonbeli teljesítményéről!

You would think anytime that a player is among the best on the team, they have moved beyond attending a developmental camp, but there Aleksander Barkov sits at the top of the prospects list and also at the top of the depth chart.

Barkov may be the most representation of the Panthers this coming season. So close, but so far away. With players like himself, Nick Bjugstad and first overall pick Aaron Ekblad expected to not only lead the organization in the future but possibly as soon as this season you can why you have to force yourself to hasten the expectations.

Some of the analyst stated at the draft that it wouldn’t be a shocker if Florida competed for a playoff spot as soon as next season- remélem be is jutunk a PO-ba-, and while the additions of Jussi Jokinen and Dave Bolland can only help that, it will always fall on the hands of Barkov, Bjugstad and Ekblad.

That is what makes this camp so interesting, even with Bjugstad not in it. You get a chance to see two of the team’s building block on the ice together for the first time.

Oh and it doesn’t hurt to get to see the likes of Michael Downing, Michael Matheson, and Ian McCoshen also skating around on the ice, patrolling the blue line like they all will one day.

With one of the best collections of prospects the game has to offer, it won’t take too long to realize that when they hit the ice on Monday.

The Florida Panthers have finalized their coaching staff for the 2014-15 season by adding two new assistants to join first-year head coach Gerard Gallant, goaltending coach Robb Tallas, and holdover assistant John Madden. The new hires are Mark Morris, who spent the last eight season coaching the American Hockey League's Manchester Monarchs, and former Saint John Sea Dogs head coach and general manger, Mike Kelly.

"We'll have a good, long look at him at training camp," general manager Dale Tallon told the Miami Herald. "If he's ready, he's ready. If not, well, [Jonathan] Huberdeau went back. Guys come back better players. But if he's ready, we're keeping him, no doubt. We're still thinking the same thing about this being a marathon. We're getting closer with each draft."

"There are a series of milestones and I have to perform and prove that I'm ready at each one of them," Ekblad said. "I'm obviously going to get the chance, but I have to prove myself. I can't rest on my laurels, rest on where I was drafted. I consider all of us as equals."

"He's a kid in a man's body but is very confident and well-rounded in his game," McCabe said. "He's very grounded and humble and doesn't act like a first-overall pick. He's going through the grind with everyone else. … He has handled the pressure thus far; there's no reason to think he won't now. He is very mature for his age."

Ami eddig történt és további infók:

FLORIDA PANTHERS

Additions: Dave Bolland, Jussi Jokinen, Shawn Thornton, Derek MacKenzie, Willie Mitchell, Al Montoya, Aaron Ekblad

Re-signed: none

Still unsigned: Jimmy Hayes (RFA), Brandon Pirri (RFA), Erik Gudbranson (RFA), Dmitry Kulikov (RFA), Dylan Olsen (RFA), Scott Gomez (UFA), Krys Barch (UFA)

Subtractions: Ed Jovanovski (buyout), Tom Gilbert (Montreal Canadiens), Scott Clemmensen (New Jersey Devils)

The Panthers have a new coach in Gerard Gallant and a host of new veteran players that could make Florida a playoff contender again. Ekblad, though, is the most intriguing player who will be in training camp because he was the No. 1 pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Gallant has options for his lineup with Nick Bjugstad, Aleksander Barkov and Bolland likely slotted in as Florida's top-three centers. Jonathan Huberdeau, Brad Boyes, Tomas Fleischmann and Jokinen appear to be the leading candidates to round out the Panthers' top-six group of forwards.

Provided the Panthers re-sign Gudbranson, Kulikov and Olsen, their defense corps in front of goalie Roberto Luongo looks deep when you also factor in Brian Campbell, Mitchell and Ekblad.

These moves could wind up costing Florida only money without any results, but they could be a sign of things to come. The last time Tallon went diving this deep into the free-agency well was in 2011, and those Panthers went on to win the Southeast Division and make the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.

Aláíratni Hayes-t, Guddy-t, Kuli-t, Pirri-t, Krys-t, az eszkimómexikóit és Olsen-t!

Shawn Thornton:

The Florida Panthers continued to add to their roster, and eat up cap space, by signing enforcer-type Shawn Thornton to a two-year, $2.4 million contract.

The 36-year-old Thornton has spent the last seven season with the Boston Bruins and brings grit, experience and two Stanley Cup rings to South Florida. His best season was in 2009-10 when scored 10 goals and 10 assists in 79 games. The Oshawa, ON native has racked up 906 career PIM.

I'm a bit flummoxed by this signing. Yes, I know the Panthers are always short on toughness, but bringing in a 36-year-old to take up a spot on the fourth-line doesn't seem like the best of ideas. Let's hope Thornton has enough gas left in the tank to warrant bringing him in. Tallon loves his old Blackhawks, eh?

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to an entry-level contract with G Sam Brittain. In addition, the club also announced that they agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with D Blake Parlett.

Brittain, 22, appeared in 39 games with the Denver Pioneers (NCHC) this season, posting a 19-14-6 mark with a 2.22 GAA, a .946 save percentage and five shutouts. He led Denver to the inaugural NCHC Championship and was named 2014 NCHC Goalie of the Year. Brittain was also one of five finalists for the Mike Richter Award, given to the goalie who best displays outstanding skill on the ice, along with academic achievement, sportsmanship and community service.

During his rookie year with Denver (2010-2011), he ranked first among NCAA rookie goaltenders in wins (19) and third in goals against average (2.28) and save percentage (.921). For his career with the Pioneers, Brittain played in 97 games going 51-34-11 with seven shutouts. The Calgary, Alberta, native was selected by Florida in the fourth round (92nd overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Parlett, 25, spent the 2013-2014 season in the American Hockey League playing in both Springfield and Providence. In 62 games with the two clubs, he recorded four goals, 19 assists and 31 PIM. In four AHL seasons, the Bracebridge, Ontario, native has played in 217 games registering 81 points (18-63-81) and 179 penalty minutes.

F Shawn Thornton, 2 yrs @ $1.2M per
F Derek MacKenzie, 3 yrs @ $1.3M per
D Willie Mitchell, 2 yrs @ $4.25M per

Willie Mitchell:

In what is likely the last move by the Panthers on this first day of the 2014 free agent signing period, the team inked UFA defenseman Willie Mitchell to a two-year deal worth $8.5 million ($4.25M per year). Mitchell played more than 20 minutes per game for the league champion Los Angeles Kings last season, after spending 2012-13 recovering from injury. He is 6'3" and 210 lbs, shoots left handed, and makes the front of the net a very unpleasant place for opposing forwards.

Mitchell is in no way an offensively-gifted blueliner, but he was an important part of the Kings Cup run just weeks ago. Drafted in 1996, he's logged 795 NHL games, as well as 89 playoff appearances. He is not a fast skater, but uses his size and experience well. Most importantly for the Panthers, Mitchell brings a pair of Stanley Cup wins and the attendant experience earned with them to help in educating a very young Panthers backend.

Finally, Roberto Luongo apparently was a big proponent of this signing.

Ha bírja sérülés nélkül, remek igazolás lesz! Példakép a fiataloknak, és remélhetőleg sokat erősít majd a kapunk előtti játékunkon!

Derek MacKenzie:

The Florida Panthers have inked center Derek MacKenzie to a three-year, $3.9 million contract. The 33-year-old has spent the last seven years as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. MacKenize seems to slot in as the Cats' fourth-line center and is expected to be one of the team's penalty-killers.

MacKenzie was originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999. He enjoyed a fine junior career with OHL's Sudbury Wolves and won a bronze medal as a member of Canada's 2001 WJC entry.

This looks like a pretty solid signing as MacKenzie is a good fourth-liner who can contribute on offense a bit, but with with Cats needing more goals and Dale Tallon stating he was looking for a couple defenders, one wonders if this was all that necessary.

4.sorba, védekezni, emberhátrányos szituációkban hasznos lehet. Sok a center, még lesznek változások...

Let's hope Thornton has enough gas left in the tank to warrant bringing him in. Tallon loves his old Blackhawks, eh?

4.sorba, védekezni, parasztnak lenni. Remélem nem azt jelenti, hogy Barchnak mennie kell!

Al Montoya:

After Dan Ellis performed pitifully in South Florida last season, Dale Tallon has gone out and gotten some competition for him, signing Al Montoya to a two-year deal with a cap hit of $1.05 million a year. With Roberto Luongo needing a rest here and there, Montoya does provide the Panthers with a viable backup option, who should be able to come in and do well enough for the team to win games, even without the No. 1 goaltender in net. This was a great signing, as the thought of Ellis getting consistent NHL starts is downright terrifying.

Mi lesz Dan Ellis sorsa? AHL, vagy távozás? Egyébként örülök, Luongo mögé tökéletes back up-nak tűnik!

Dave Bolland:

The Panthers claimed they would be active on July 1, and they continue to be true to their word, this time signing former Maple Leaf (and former Blackhawk) center Dave Bolland to a five-year, $27.5m deal. The annual cap hit will be $5.5m per year. Bolland stated that his choices were down to Toronto and Florida, and it certainly looks like he pursued the benjamins in this case.

Ennyi pénzért nagyon sokat várok tőle! Szkeptikus vagyok, remélem nem csak a kincsért jött, hanem segít a csapaton és mentora lehet a fiataloknak: Shore, Barkov, Pirri, Bjugstad!

Jussi Jokinen:

The Florida Panthers made their first move in free agency today, and it was a good one, by signing left wing Jussi Jokinen to four-year, $16 million contract.

The 31-year-old Jokinen, who was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in 2000, is coming off a 21-goal, 57-point campaign with the Pittsburgh Penguins and has accumulated 414 points in 660 NHL regular season games.

Jokinen, who bagged a career-high 30 goals in 2009-01 with the Hurricanes, will be a welcome addition to the Panthers top six, giving either Aleksander Barkov or Nick Bjugstad a solid option on the flank.

Első két sor valamelyikébe igazoltuk, szélsőként kell kiszolgálnia a centereket. illetve gólokat ütnie. Kíváncsian várom!

The Florida Panthers have signed centre Dave Bolland to a five-year contract worth an average annual value of $5.5 million.

Bolland played just 23 games last season in his first year with the Toronto Maple Leafs after an ankle injury suffered early in the season. He was effective for the Leafs when he did play, scoring eight goals and four assists in 23 games, all but two of those points coming in the 15 games before he went down due to injury.

He is coming off a five-year deal he signed with Chicago prior to the 2009-10 season worth an average annual value of $3.375 million.

The Mimico, Ont. native spent the first six years of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks, winning two Stanley Cups in the process, before the team dealt him to Toronto at the 2013 NHL Draft.

The 28-year-old forward has 78 goals and 102 assists for 180 points over 355 career games in the NHL.

Bolland was drafted by Chicago in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The Florida Panthers have tendered qualifying offers to seven of their restricted free agents and declined to make offers to four more. The five on the NHL roster receiving offers are defenseman Erik Gudbranson, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, defenseman Dylan Olsen, right wing Jimmy Hayes and forward Brandon Pirri. The Cats also tendered San Antonio Rampage forwards Garrett Wilson and Ryan Martindale, who was recently acquired from the Edmonton Oilers. The offers mean the Panthers organization retains rights to the players and has the ability to match any offer made by another club.

Four other players, prospects Steven Anthony, Jonathan Hazen, Anthony Luciani and Mattias Lindstrom, were not tendered offers and will become unrestricted free agents.

Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 National Hockey League Draft the team selected D Aaron Ekblad from the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

“We are thrilled to have selected Aaron with the No. 1 pick,” said Tallon. “He is a strong, smart and physically mature defenseman who skates well and can play at both ends of the ice. Aaron is another building block for our team and we are confident that he will fit well with our young nucleus of talented players that includes Aleksander Barkov, Nick Bjugstad, Jonathan Huberdeau and Erik Gudbranson. We look forward to his continued growth and contributions to our team and the South Florida community.”

Ekblad, 18, was named the OHL’s most outstanding defenseman during the 2013-2014 season, ranking first among the league’s blueliners with 23 goals and tied for fifth with 53 points (23-20-53). The 6-foot-3, 213-pouind defenseman became just the third player (in their 18-year-old birth year) to claim the honor in the past 20 years, following Ryan Ellis (selected 11th overall by Nashville in 2009) and Bryan Berard (selected 1st overall by Ottawa in 1995). He also served as Barrie’s team captain.

The Belle River, Ontario, native played a top-four role as a 17-year-old for Team Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship, registering two points (1-1-2) in seven games. On the international level, Ekblad captained Team Canada to the 2013 Under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial gold medal. He also served as captain of Team Ontario at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Ekblad was granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada to be eligible for the 2011 OHL Priority Selection as a 15-year-old. He was just the second player in OHL history to be given exceptional player status, following John Tavares in 2005. In his rookie season with Barrie, he recorded (10-19-29) in 63 games, earning OHL Rookie of the Year honors.
